BGC alum and current San Diego Padres star outfielder Jon Jay is giving back from coast-to-coast to the organization that helped to change his life.
Jay, who was born on March 15, 1985, in Miami, attended the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. The Club is the beneficiary of the Jon Jay FMSbonds Celebrity Bowling Challenge.
"The Boys & Girls Club was a huge part of my childhood, so this organization is near and dear to my heart," said Jon. "Nikki and I are thankful for the opportunity to give back to an organization that gave so much to me."
Jay was drafted in the second round of the 2006 MLB draft from the University of Miami. He made his MLB debut for the Cardinals in 2010 after batting .301 with 34 home runs. Jay became a Padre this season and quickly connected with our Club to see how he could get involved. He was happy to take on the task of hosting the Club’s BaseBOWL event, which was originally modeled after his bowling event in Miami-Dade.
Jay wasn’t just interested in hosting an event for the Club. He really wanted to connect with the kids. He has visited the Ron Roberts Family Branch in Linda Vista for a tour and to interact with the members. The kids enjoyed showing him their computer and arts & craft skills. The Dragons Robotics Team gave him a demonstration of their robot, in fact Jon took the controller and performed several functions with the robot. Jay has also hosted a group of Club kids for batting practice and a game. The kids were thrilled to meet Jay and his teammates.
Planning for the 2016 BaseBOWL Celebrity Tournament has been smooth under the guidance of Jay’s wife Nikki, who is expecting twins later this year. Participants will enjoy an evening of bowling, food, drink, an auction, competition and fun at the East Village Tavern+Bowl.
We are so happy that Jon and Nikki have become part of the BGCGSD family and have given their time, treasure and talent to help support the over 25,000 youth we serve.
