Impact Stories of the BGCGSD

Continuing Coach Coryell's Legacy

As we celebrate the 14th anniversary of the Don Coryell Charity Golf Tournament, we would like to salute Mindy Coryell Lewis for carrying on the legacy of her father coach Don Coryell. Mindy continues to be the guiding light that helps the tournament benefiting  our Payne Family Branch and the youth of National City a wonderful event, year after year.

She brings the passion, warmth and smiles to the event and cause that meant so much to her dad. "This was so important to my father, I want to carry on where my dad left off, ' said Mindy. As she fondly remembers the man who was a big teddy bear and very gentle, she reflects on how she feels when she visits the Club throughout the year. "When I travel down these halls, I swell up like a toad," as she quotes one of her father's famous lines. Mindy continues, "This is so important being here in National City for the children. I feel so honored to just be a part of what happens here.

We are honored to have Mindy as part of our family and have her help change the lives of the youth in National City. Thank you Mindy so much from the entire BGCGSD family for all that you do!

The 2016 edition of the tournament featured 93 golfers, including former SDSU Aztecs and San Diego Chargers players, playing at the Steele Canyon Golf Club. The tournament, which featured golf, continental breakfast, putting contest, on-course games, gourmet lunch program, silent auction and opportunity drawing prizes, netted over $57,000 to help serve the youth of National City. Former Chargers Hank Bauer and Willie Buchanan co-emceed the event. The tournament champions were the foursome of Larry Acuna, Jimmy Allison, Dave Buckles and Jared Buckles.
