Why Mentoring Is So Important
Studies have shown that children who are involved in a mentoring relationship are less likely to engage in at-risk behaviors. Mentoring can help children develop healthy relationships with their peers and adults. Mentoring can also help a child have a sense of importance, improve their confidence and help them perform better academically.
Elements of the Mentor Program
Education & Career Development
Through programs like Power Hour, students will work one-on-one or in small group tutoring sessions to develop academic skill-building and goal setting plans. Older students can participate in CareerLaunch, which is a mentoring component for 13-18 year olds, where they are matched with adult professionals with similar career interest. These mentors will work with the teens to understand the skill and motivations required for that career, and to help them strengthen their academic and job readiness skills and work ethic.
Character and Citizenship
Torch Clubs and Keystone Clubs are character and leadership building clubs for students 11-18 years old. Mentors in these programs work with small groups of participants giving them guidance and encourage them towards academic success and character development through field trips and community service.
Health & Life Skills
Through our SMART Girls program adult mentoring by the group leader throughout the curriculum helps foster self-confidence and enhances communication skills. Using the mentoring activity that involves mothers or other role models and reinforces skills learned in sessions.
Our Passport to Manhood program, mentees meet once a week with a mentor to discuss one positive accomplishment of the week. The adult leader also acts as a mentor to the participants covering topics such as education, career development, risky behaviors, community service and healthy lifestyles.
