On December 3, Club members from the William J. Oakes, Encanto, Clairemont and Prebys Ramona branches traveled to the Del Mar Fairgrounds to participate in this year’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Maker Festival along with hundreds of other youth from over 200 schools spanning 42 districts. Activities from the day included live sword fighting in historic, battle-cage fashion, KIDTRIS (like Tetris, but with kids running as the pieces), live animal presentations and encounters, rocketry and space exploration, robotics demonstrations, and even a drone fly zone. There were also a number of challenges offered at the festival, a few of which our brave club members participated (and dominated) in!
Clairemont boasted two challenge groups, one that participated in the Bug Safari Challenge, which required them to collect and catalog bugs in the month leading up to the festival, and present their findings onstage to judges. The other Clairemont team participated in the Fashion Design challenge, along with Ramona’s Fashion Design team, which required them to build an eco-friendly and fashion-forward outfit from the chaos that was the giant recyclable materials pile at the center of the exposition hall, and then model their outfit onstage. Clairemont went on to win first place in this challenge! Congratulations Clairemont!
