The Payne Family Branch in National City hosted their first annual Chili Cook-Off Challenge between the National City Police and Fire Departments. The event was a huge success as over 125 people from the community attended and had a great time. Some of the best chili in town made by the competing crews was served to the guests. Live music from Angela Alvarez and Corina Rose filled the room. National City Mayor Ron Morrison made a special appearance to support the event. The highlight of the evening was a performance by our own Ballet Folklorico dance troupe, who danced their little hearts out. A huge heartfelt thanks to the fireman and policeman of National City and their respective Associations for donating the ingredients and preparing the chili! Congratulations to the Fire Department for taking home the title. The event raised $1,600 for the Club's Little Jumps, BIG Changes Healthy Lifestyles campaign. The total helped the branch reach it campaign goal. Thank you to everyone who attended. We already cannot wait for next year.
About Little Jumps Campaign
Today's youth face many challenges in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As a result, the childhood obesity rate in San Diego is nearly double the national average. Recent studies show that 75% of teens do not eat enough fruits and vegetables, and 85% of adolescent girls do not consume enough calcium. These children are at great risk for future health problems, including diabetes and heart disease.
To combat this growing problem, our members learn the importance of a Healthy Lifestyle through daily exercise, nutrition education, sports leagues, eating healthy snacks, and participating in a variety of fun fitness choices such as dance, karate, swimming, and yoga!
