Impact Stories of the BGCGSD

What We Learn Becomes Part of Who We Are
When James first started the program 2 years ago, he did not speak to anyone, and had a lot of trouble following directions. He ignored staff to the point that one staff thought that she was deaf, another staff thought that she spoke another language. It took months to get James to open up, and it was staff person Liz and the art program that helped him to do so. Liz noticed that James was an exceptional artist, and began to talk with James about the National Fine Arts Exhibit. James entered her art and was also named “Artist of the Month.” His confidence really began to grow. It has taken time, and he still has stubborn moments, but the fact that he readily answers questions and engages in conversation is huge for us.
