Impact Stories of the BGCGSD

It's back to school time!

Back to school time can be stressful for kids. There’s questions like: Will I like my teacher? Will my friends be in my class? Will I be able to find my way around my new school? For low income kids, this time of year can be extra stressful. There is often not money for new school clothes, backpacks and school supplies. But thanks to you, our kids are ready for a fabulous school year.

Thanks to our corporate partners, NBC7, Telemundo, and generous individuals, we collected and distributed over 400 backpacks filled with school supplies. Our members were so excited to pick out their backpack and open it up to find all their new supplies. One little boy cried out, “I got markers! I’ve never had my own markers before! And they’re the good ones too.” It’s such a simple thing, but created so much excitement.

In addition to the backpacks, 42 Club members got to go on a $200 shopping spree to Kohl’s. Board members were matched with kids from throughout the organization. The board member helped their match pick out the perfect clothes and shoes to start the school year off right.

Xavier, who has been attending the Club since he was 5, was chosen to be a part of our Back to School Shopping spree. He is going into the 4th grade and calls the Club his second home. His mother was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and has been in and out of the hospital. Xavier had a rough time in school last year. His grades were falling behind when the staff stepped up to fill in the gaps by giving him extra time and attention. Xavier was so excited to be chosen to go shopping and get new school clothes for this coming school year.
