Summer With A Goal

BGCGSD is fighting summer learning loss with our new SWAG Hour (Summer With A Goal).

Research shows that children can lose one to three months of grade level proficiency in both math and reading over the summer school breaks. Six weeks in the fall are spent re-learning old material to make up for the summer learning loss. By the end of grade six, students who have experienced summer learning loss over the years are an average of two years behind their peers. Two – three hours per week of educational pursuits during the summer break helps prevent learning loss.

At least one hour each day at all of our sites is spent in fun, hands-on educational activities. Because this is the Club, the emphasis is on FUN! Our members are learning and keeping their minds sharp without even realizing it.

Activities vary from site to site, but include things like reading clubs, STEM activities, robotics, gardening club, geography club and more. Members have a summer passport and earn badges when they complete a certain number of SWAG hours. At the end of the summer, members who have participated consistently throughout the summer will receive swag for back to school: backpacks filled with school supplies.
